putting my foot sorta down
the inspiration for this story arch came from 500 Days of Summer, which i thought was a really good movie. i was able to identify with a lot of the emotions in it, as i’ve felt some of them while growing up. here, i’m putting the character through a tough situation where he obviously likes her (hopefully for more than just her looks!) but she’s being non-committal. its tough because if he stand up, he may lose any opportunity with her. but if he stays, then at least he gets the chance to change her mind. of course the trap here is that she will never change her mind! if she would, she would’ve done it already. but being in the situation, it’s so hard to realize the reality of the situation. but hey, that’s what friends are for!
been really enjoying this new character with her bright scarlet hair. maybe we’ll see more of her! artwork wise, combining a couple different new elements here, the non-panel box with no balloons, and the nighttime bedroom shot. i find that i’m improving on my ability to draw interesting body postures, but i think my art still isn’t stylized enough yet. there’s more life i could be instilling in these characters.
I loved that movie. As I was watching, it occurred to me that I was the character of Tom and that most of my past relationships have been with women like Summer who are so aloof and how I kept trying to hang to something because I believed it was fate though all signs pointed otherwise. It just reaffirms how lucky I am to have moved on and found the love of my life who actually cares about me as much as I care about her.
I disagree with you on the ‘if she was going to change she would have already’. That
basically says no one ever changes, no one ever grows. We all change all the time.
And, just maybe, hanging around with a hot girl, with no hope for going further has
some rewards of it’s own. I’ve been married for almost 30 years. I love being married.
I also love having highly attractive much younger women around. It’s like appreciating
a beautiful sunset…or a ‘Monet’ etc.
Your comic is adorable. As a woman, dating a level-designer and comic creator, it’s particularly appropriate.
I really enjoy your humor and you bring a lot of meaning into a simple 3-panel.
This one in particular is hilarious because I have long, dark red hair too. LOL
Love your comic. I date a level designer who is also a comic artist and what you do w/ your simple 3 panel is very deep.
Like it a lot!
